Additional Terms that may be flagged by NIH - July, 2026

Prior to issuing all awards, NIH Institutes/Centers are reviewing the specific aims/major goals of the project to assess whether the proposed project contains any research activities that are not consistent with current Presidential Executive Orders, HHS, and NIH priorities. While there is no specific list of terms, the use of the words below may misconstrue the content of your project as not aligned with the priorities.

 

  • Bias (e.g., racial bias, interpersonal bias, implicit bias, explicit bias)
  • Climate change, environmental justice
  • Discrimination (including measures of perceived discrimination)
  • Diverse, diversity
  • Equity, inequity, inequities, inequalities
  • Gender identity, gender-affirming
  • Immigration status, undocumented
  • Inclusion (except when used in reference to human subjects requirements)
  • Latinx
  • Minoritized
  • Racism
  • Social disadvantage
  • Social justice
  • Structural racism
  • Underrepresented
  • Underserved
