Sadly, we announce the recent passing of Ernestine Florence who worked at the Institute for more than 30 years, starting in 1977.  She was an assistant to two directors (Phil Lee and Hal Luft) and then served as fellowship coordinator for the Institute’s training programs.  Included in her many responsibilities working with Phil, Ernestine tirelessly scheduled appointments and kept track of them on three hand-written calendars (yes, before computers!) and also maintained his infamous rolodex, that launched so many careers.

Over decades, she welcomed the fledgling student, esteemed academic or senior governmental official, with warmth and receptiveness. It was difficult not to feel at ease once Ernestine engaged her radiant smile.  Even on difficult days, she embodied grace, patience and kindness.  She was a dedicated colleague who was cherished by her Institute family--fellows, staff and faculty with whom she worked. Our community benefited from the wisdom and skills she acquired from a large, loving intergenerational family.

Ernestine also had a side gig and passion—singing.  Over the years, she would perform at local clubs or bay area venues which she greatly enjoyed.  She joined a number of other Institute “stars” to lead group singing at a celebration for Phil Lee in 2007 and gave a stellar performance in a stage production (developed by another staff member, Annie Larson) at a celebration for Hal Luft in 2008.  She also shared her beautiful voice with UCSF colleagues at a Millberry Union concert on campus.

After retiring, Ernestine devoted much time and effort to helping family members and friends.  Her generosity  was boundless and her optimism grounded in deep faith. She also continued to sing occasionally—with family,  with two friends (also formerly at UCSF), and for a time as a member of a senior chorus group.  Ernestine was a  treasure and contributed to the Institute's legacy, history and enduring sense of community and will be deeply missed.
