Asthma is a leading cause of childhood emergency visits and hospitalizations, with total direct costs of ∼$6 billion annually in the United States.1–3 Poor guideline compliance by clinicians contributes to poor health outcomes for children with asthma in emergency department (ED) and inpatient settings, including increased risk of unnecessary interventions, hospital admission, prolonged stay, transfer to intensive care, and hospital readmission. Consequently, asthma has been a top focus of pediatric quality improvement (QI) efforts.
