Bern Shen, MD is Chief Medical Officer of HealthCrowd. Alongside important social, commercial and political determinants of health (and health policy), technology will likely play an increasing role in both informing and enabling optimal health and policy. Dr. Shen brings to the IHPS Advisory Board his experience as a researcher, forecaster, entrepreneur and investor, aiming to serve IHPS as a health/tech “radar” and reality check.
Originally double Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Shen practiced clinically for fifteen years in both the US and abroad (with a focus on disaster medicine) before transitioning to a health tech career. He discovered an affinity for health/tech forecasting while working at Hewlett Packard Labs, Oracle, and as Intel’s chief healthcare strategist, and while leading the health practice at the Institute for the Future.
After a decade in large tech companies, he then spent a decade as a startup entrepreneur, advisor and investor (with the Band of Angels, Silicon Valley’s oldest angel group). During this time, he also served as a health/tech “oracle” to reinsurance and risk expert, Swiss Re, a founding Board member of Clayton Christensen’s Institute for Disruptive Innovation, and a tech transfer expert at the University of Iowa and the Cleveland Clinic.
