Impacting Policy Internationally: IHPS + IMPACT Policy Skills Series
The IHPS+IMPACT Policy Skills Series will continue at a special time from 9-10 AM on April 10th to accommodate the 12.5 hour time difference for our guest speaker! Dr. Anurag Bhargava from Yenepoya Medical College in Mangalore, India, will join us to discuss impacting health policy internationally. Dr. Bhargava will discuss his work researching the impact of undernutrition and TB as well as his successful campaign to have the Indian government directly support enhanced nutrition for patients with TB. He will also discuss his roles with the Global TB Programme and the World Health Organization (WHO). We'll be in a zoom meeting rather than a webinar to allow more engagement!
Anurag Bhargava is a MD Medicine (AIIMS Delhi 1990) and M.Sc. Epidemiology (McGill University, Canada). He is currently a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University. He also hold various advisory roles including; Member, Strategic Technical Advisory Group-TB (STAG-TB) for the Global TB programme, Geneva; Member, STAG-TB of the WHO South East Asia Regional Office, New Delhi; Member, National Technical Working Group on TB and Co-morbidities, NTEP, New Delhi.
Dr. Bhargava has 34 years of clinical experience at all levels of care in India including 10 years in a non-profit healthcare organisation in a tribal area of Chhattisgarh. He ran an award-winning pro-patient TB treatment programme in a rural area for 10 years.
His research interests are in the field of tuberculosis, acute febrile illnesses, and non-communicable diseases. His work along with his wife Madhavi Bhargava has brought to attention the strong yet ignored connections between undernutrition and TB incidence and mortality in India. He led the development of the National TB Elimination Programme’s (NTEP’s) Guidance Document on Nutritional Care and Support that led to the launch of the direct benefit transfer scheme to all patients with tuberculosis in India in 2018. He was the Principal Investigator of the landmark RATIONS trial of nutritional interventions in TB preventions and care in Jharkhand, whose results have aroused global interest.
Dr. Bhargava has 56 publications in leading National and International Journals (including Lancet, International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, British Medical Journal) and coauthor in 3 National Guidelines.
